At regular dealerships, cars are displayed with a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price but everything including options, warranty, financing and dealer profit is negotiable.

Research has shown that educated consumers pay much less for cars at regular dealerships than at no-haggle dealerships. This is because regular dealers set average profit goals over time. For example, if they sell five cars, the average profit per car should be a certain amount, say $1,000. That means of those five cars, three could sell for $1000 profit, but the dealer could make $2000 and $0 profit on the remaining two cars and still hit their goal. Kosaku Yamada, ES 300 chief engineer, tells me that the real differential between Toyota and other vehicle manufacturers is not the TPS. It's the Toyota Product Development System.

So I ask him to tell me more about it. He smiles.

This one stays in house.

Here's one thing to consider about product development at Toyota. Yamada has been with the ES 300 since there has been an ES 300 (it first appeared in the fall of 1991 as a model year 1992 vehicle). He knows the car thoroughly. (Yes, he is also in charge of the platform-mate, the Camry.)

This leads to a series of questions that people at other vehicle manufacturing companies ought to ponder:

* How many engineers at other automakers stay with a given platform for more than one iteration?

* How many other engineers take a continuous improvement approach to a given platform for such a length of time?

* How many cars are as successful, year in, year out, as the ES 300?

Maybe this is part of the secret of the Toyota Product Development System: People stay with the program for a long time.

And there is another thing that becomes clear. Yamada's vision is that which is realized in the vehicle. Although he says, "To be sure we would exceed expectations with this new model, we went straight to the source--our customers." That's the sort of consumer surveying that is part and parcel of any vehicle development program. But he also talks about how he once had time to pursue a hobby, which was to design and build things ranging from furniture to an entire house ("I don't have time for hobbies like that anymore." Which isn't too surprising, given the ES 300 and the Camry.). Clearly, he is someone who is hands-on and attentive to all aspects of what he creates ("Because we wanted every detail to be perfect we even engineered the ashtray, cup holder, glove box, and sunglass holder to open at the same, consistent speed.").

Yamada says: "By putting my heart and soul into this design, just as I do all of the things I make, I hope this ES 300 will inspire owners to love their cars and keep customers in the Lexus family for years to come."

So here's another aspect of the Toyota Product Development System: The chief engineer is the person in charge. You may think there is a whole lot of consensus-building that goes on during development, but I'm willing to bet that when it gets right down to it, the chief engineer is the chief.

There were five objectives that Yamada and his colleagues pursued in the 30-month development of the 2002 ES 300 (24 months from design freeze) In Yamada's words they are:

* Exciting exterior and interior styling

* A luxurious, comfortable and quiet cabin

* Excellent power and performance

* Outstanding driving stability and ride comfort

* Global best-in-class safety performance.

Although some of these aspects are certainly subjective, most of them are the result of solid engineering. It is worth noting that as the ES 300 follows the LS 430; the flagship sedan had carryover effects on the ES 300. Clements quips, "We could have called it the 'LS 300'."

When speaking of the 2002 ES 300 as compared to the previous vehicle, Yamada says that they "pulled out a clean sheet of paper."

How many bucks would you spend to watch a Jet and a bike make love? Not very many I guess, but you must be curious to see the result of this rather unfortunate procreation. Meet MonoTracer! The futuristic looking vehicle is actually a real-life working model and is being built and sold by Peraves.

Basically, MonoTracer is an advanced version of the normal bikes. A cabin mounted on a bike and the drag gets minimized to a great extent, making MonoTracer highly effective at achieving high speeds and greater levels of safety. The vehicle flies at a top speed of 250 kmph and can go from zero to hundred in 5.7 seconds. So time for the distressing factor now: the price. You must doll out $82,350 for a MonoTracer. But hey, the coolness associated with this one makes the buying decision a no-brainer.

The American company UniModal Transport Solutions developed a concept for a very high-capacity and high-speed Personal Rapid Transport (PRT) network. Pictures and informations of this sky transportation vehicle are showed below.

This SkyTran system operates with individual, two-passenger vehicles, which are propelled and suspended by a maglev system from overhead guideways. These are laid out in a one mile by one mile networked grid throughout the city. A large number of small departure and exit portals are placed underneath the guideways at approximately every 400 metres or at every city block.

SkyTran has no fixed routes or timetables. Users can simply enter any departure portal, get into the first empty vehicle in the queue and select their destination. The vehicle then speeds up on the acceleration lane and enters the high-speed overhead guideway.

At the selected exit portal, the vehicle enters a deceleration lane where the speed is reduced until it stops at the arrival portal. Individual vehicles are capable of speeds up to 160 kilometres per hour within city limits or 240 kilometres per hour between cities. A very short braking distance allows a distance between traveling vehicles of a mere 25 metres.

sQuba : The World’s First Real Diving Car

It has been 30 years since we first saw James Bond in his Lotus Esprit Submarine in “The Spy Who Loved Me” which sent our imaginations into overdrive, and now Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht has realised a long cherished dream with the creation of their latest concept named “sQuba”.

Swiss design company Rinspeed is known for its eccentric concepts, including last year’s translucent eXasis Concept and the “Splash” hydrofoil car that set a speed record crossing the English Channel.

Rinspeed is once again turning to the water for its latest concept, although this time they will be heading below the surface instead of skimming above it. Set to debut at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show (March 6th thru 16th, 2008), the sQuba concept is the world’s first diving car, according to the company, and can be submerged up to 10 meters below the surface.

An electric motor provides power to the rear wheels as well as two propellers and dual jet drives, and a futuristic cockpit comes with its own supply of oxygen. Like many of Rinspeed’s other unique creations, the sQuba will only remain a one-off and there are no plans for production. That’s right, you heard me, 300 miles to the gallon. It must have something to do with its 3 wheels or something. There are two innovative models that are already pretty much production ready, and could be open as early as next year!

The Super-MPG Electric Typ-1 e has been field tested and is all electric. As for the Typ-1 h, that should be out by 2009. There is even a third model already in the works, with a four-wheeled design.

It looks like some car of the future like some sci-fi movie of the past. You know, like that one in AI, if you even bothered to see that movie.

Okay, let’s see if the oil companies crack down on this guy due to its electric ness. I’m not certain this car is as green as it looks, as it appears to be only made for two passengers. We could use a family-sized one.

Now, the estimated price on the first model is about $30,000. Let’s see how it does.

Three Amazing Sports Car Collections

The Boston Museum of Fine Arts showed the Ralph Lauren’s exhibit and states that he started collecting in the 1960’s. It can be said that Lauren’s is a connoisseur of fine cars and chose the automobiles in his collection, from Bugattis and a 1950 Jaguar XK 120 Alloy Roadster based on their fashion appeal as well as speed. His newest addition is a speed demon’s dream, a 1996 McLaren F1, which can easily pass speeds of 225 mph.

The air conditioning is scaled down in the concept. The flat fuel tank is located in the center and differential is located behind the driveshaft which allows the wheels to be placed in the extreme corners that results in very short over hangs.

According to Toyota, IQ is designed to meet Euro NCAP’s 5 star safety rating standards. The steering is flat bottomed which has in-built audio controls that gives extra leg rooms for the driver. The rear seats could be folded for additional luggage space.

The car will go for sale in UK market in 2009. Toyota is for long is trying to built a cheap small car that could be sold in multiple car markets with ease and this could be first step towards that.

Nissan was showing off the new version of their Nissan Murano as well as the new Infiniti EX35, while Toyota, in addition to tooting its own horn, exhibited its current hybrid technology.

If you are familiar with the 2007 Murano (there is no 2008 model), you won’t mistake the 2009 version for anything else. The distinctive shape is still there, but something about the previous generation’s style got lost in translation. A softening in the style of both the front and rear portions of the vehicle makes the new Murano less edgy and, unfortunately, more bland.

The interior, on the other hand, is much more inviting. Upgrades in materials and design put it on a par with the best in its class.

2008 Infiniti EX35

Based on the G35 architecture, the EX adds a rear hatch and more headroom. Options include Lane Departure Prevention as well as AVM – a 4 camera monitoring system on the sides and ends of the vehicle designed to help with close-in maneuvers such as parking.

Toyota A-BAT Concept

Revealed at this year’s NAIAS, the A-BAT is a hybrid clone of the Honda Ridgeline. While Detroit Auto Show attendees could only gaze on it from afar, engineers at the 2008 World Congress were able to get up close and personal. While the styling may be derivative, the powertrain certainly isn’t. Toyota engineers installed the parallel hybrid system they call Hybrid Synergy Drive in this concept that includes a 4-cylinder gasoline engine coupled to an electric motor. 2008 Dodge Challenger

2 008 Dodge Challenger resembles the 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T. The Challenger concept has a heritage design which is quite evident with its dual headlights and kicked-up shoulders. T he car is built on shorthand version of the rear wheel drive LX platform used for the Charger sedan and Magnum wagon.

Initial rumors indicated that this car would be available in the market by 2009. The latest is that it will debut itself much before somewhere in 2008. First the car would be shown in auto shows and if there is enough good feedbacks then this concept will see the light of the market. The car is scheduled to debut at 2006 Detroit Auto Show, which is in January of 2006.

Engine that will come in Challenger concept is not known but one thing is for sure that there will definitely be a Hemi available. Supplier sources tell Inside Line that the 6.1-liter Hemi is being reserved for the high-performance SRT-8 edition of the 2008 Challenger; it's not clear whether the six-speed manual will make the cut for production. Somewhere I read that the 2008 Dodge Challenger concept will be powered by a 6.1-liter Hemi V8 mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with a pistol-grip shifter.

2008 Porsche Cayenne GTS Preview – 2008 Chicago Auto Show: For those who can't afford the Turbo with their S, Porsche has an answer: the 2008 Cayenne GTS, with more power, a manual transmission and a more sporting suspension. It's built for drivers who have to drive an SUV, on a budget, but like to put some fun and challenge into their daily grind. Other upgrades include Porsche’s active electronic damping and air suspension as standard equipment, redesigned sports seats front and back, extended wheel arches and new body work front and rear. The GTS goes on sale in the U.S. this month with an MSRP of $69,300.

Why it Matters

If you want power, get the Turbo. If you want tight handling and a little more power, try the less expensive but still fun Cayenne GTS. Plus, you get two nifty and exclusive paint colors: Nordic Gold (pictured here) and GTS Red.

What’s Under the Hood

Of course, any talk about "budget" and 70 grand spent on a vehicle is purely a coincidence, but you get the point if you're priced out of the Turbo. As for the GTS, there's a six-speed manual transmission for starters, and the fact that it is the first Cayenne to offer Porsche's Active Suspension Management (PASM) as standard equipment. This helps get a big rig like the Cayenne around corners like a car, kinda, especially when you add optional air springs and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC). The GTS also makes 20 more horsepower, to 405 hp at 6,500 rpm and 369 lb.-ft. of torque.

What It Looks Like

Porsche says the front looks like the Cayenne Turbo, and we’ll have to take their word on that for now. Bigger fender flares and 21-inch wheels, along with the lower stance are the main differences between the GTS and its three Cayenne siblings. Inside are redesigned sport seats covered in Alcantara.

The automaker describes the Cayenne GTS as the model with the best on-road characteristics.

What We Think

Due out in February of 2008, the Porsche Cayenne GTS gets a base sticker price of $69,300. That's an interesting vehicle for just under $70,000, enough so that one has to wonder why the six-speed manual is the gearbox of choice. The Cayenne is, after all, built for drivers who don't necessarily want to have to earn it anymore.
